What We Do
The Cockermouth Museum Group is part of Kirkgate Arts, based at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth. We research and record all aspects of Cockermouth’s history, and that of the surrounding area. We collect (or copy) old photographs, as well as artefacts of all kinds that were made, used or owned in our area. We now have a considerable collection of items, which are used in regular exhibitions at the Kirkgate Centre, or to answer local and family history queries.
We currently meet on Monday evenings in the Egremont Room at the Kirkgate Centre between 7.45 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., when we work on maintaining/recording our collection, and discuss any issues/queries relating to local or family history.
Family/Local History Research
Whilst we are unable to offer a family history research service, we are happy to help with individual family history queries, and can offer a look-up service in directories and limited family files that we hold. Similarly, we are happy to answer local history queries. All enquiries should be sent on the form in the Contact Us section, alternatively you can email us directly - firstname.lastname@example.org. See also the Resources section for available resources.
